Recording the sounds of Niagara river in Canada and Han River in South Korea, investigating how river systems support a diverse array of human and nonhuman activities.

In May of 2023 I travelled to Seoul, South Korea and spent two weeks conducting field recordings along a 60 kilometre section of the Han River that runs east-west through the city from the Yeongdong to Mapo bridges.

I was very fortunate to receive in-kind support from LOM, and used a Geofón sensor with the neodymium magnet attachment to capture nearly 100 recordings from the metallic structures of these bridges. The quality of the recordings rendered via the LOM technology was astounding.

The audio captured during this trip was used to create an ambient soundscape titled Sounding Waters: Han River Bridges (Seoul, South Korea). This work was presented as part of an international exhibition at the Korean Cultural Centre Gallery in Ottawa, Canada called “Two Rivers Crossed Landscape” that opening in July, 2023. The exhibition featured photography, video, sculpture, and sound work created in collaboration with South Korean artist Lee Yeon-Sook.

“Two Rivers Crossed Landscape” engaged with themes of complex interconnectivity and reciprocity, and commemorated the 60th anniversary of peaceful diplomatic relations between Canada and South Korea.

I am currently working on a series of surround sound compositions using the Geofón  recordings. Thank you LOM for providing me with the tools to create this series of projects.
